Last Saturday night at around 11 p.m., a man was driving westbound on Palmetto Road near the Toledo Road intersection when he collided with a car stopped at a red light and then slammed into another car, killing the driver.
According to a report by BocaNewsNow, the driver was trying to get around the vehicle that was stopped at the red light, when he mistakenly clipped the side of the vehicle instead. After clipping that vehicle, the driver’s car was sent into the intersection when it collided with a 2010 Hyundai. The Hyundai was sent careening into a tree on the side of the road. When emergency crews arrived on the scene, the driver of the Hyundai was dead. The other drivers suffered only minor injuries.
Police recently stated that they believe the driver of the car that caused the accident was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Drunk Driving Statistics in Florida
In Broward county alone, there were 985 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) convictions in 2010. Across the state of Florida there were over 33,000 DUI convictions.
In Florida, punishments for DUI can be severe, and may include:
· Fine – $250 to $500
· Community Service – 50 Hours
· Probation – Not more than 1 Year
· Imprisonment – Not more than 6 Months
· Imprisonment with blood alcohol level of .08 or higher with a minor in the vehicle, not more than 9 months
· License Revocation – Minimum of 180 days
· DUI School – 12 Hours
However, the true costs of drinking and driving can be even more costly due to the civil suit that the victim of a drunk-driving accident can bring against the driver.
Civil Suits in DUI Cases
When a drunk driver injures another party, that party may be entitled to damages due to the driver’s negligent or reckless behavior. Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is commonly known to be extremely dangerous. Those who are willing to disregard that risk are exposing themselves to hefty civil and criminal penalties.
