This past Monday, dozens of people gathered to mourn the loss of a 12 year old girl who was fatally injured in a hit and run accident the week before in Hallandale Beach. According to a report by CBS Miami, the girl’s mother organized the gathering at Foster Park that was attended by neighbors, classmates, and others in the community. The group told stories about the girl and held candles while fighting back tears.
Hallandale Beach Police state that the girl was hit when crossing Foster Avenue in front of the park last week. The car that hit the girl was located by police a short time after the accident, however the driver is still on the run.
Community members complain that this area of Foster Avenue is one common to speeders and that they, unfortunately, are not surprised that such an accident occurred. Without speed bumps or traffic signals, the road is frequently used by drivers as a cut through to Pembroke Road. The community is now lobbying local politicians to install speed bumps on the road in hopes of slowing drivers down. As one neighbor said, drivers come “flying down here like they’re on I-95.”
The girl’s mother is asking for anyone with information about the accident to come forward.
