Coral Springs Residents Push for Delayed Green Traffic Lights

No one disputes the fact that running a red light is dangerous and can likely result in a car accident. In fact, many cities across Florida have recently implemented red-light cameras that snap a picture of red-light runners and send them a ticket in the mail. The cities hope that the tickets red-light runners get will deter them from running red lights in the future.

However, some Coral Springs residents are arguing that, instead of red light cameras, Coral Springs should simply delay the green signal two seconds after the opposing traffic light turns red. This, proponents say, is a more effective way to prevent traffic and pedestrian accidents caused by red light accidents.

Here is how the theory works: It takes most cars about two seconds to clear an intersections (assuming they are traveling at the legal speed limit). If there was a two second delay between the light turning red and the opposing light turning green, this would give other cars a chance to completely clear the intersection before the traffic going the other direction would be able to legally proceed.

The problem with the red light cameras is that they merely punish those who have already ran the red light. Those in favor of the delayed green signal explain that “red light cameras only take a picture of the offender after he kills someone running through the light.”

Many Broward County Traffic Accidents Are Caused by Red Light Violations

Throughout Broward County, one of the leading causes of serious auto accidents is red light violations. These types of accidents are especially dangerous, due to the frequent high speeds at which the vehicles are traveling. In addition, when a driver runs a red light, the type of accident—broadside, or a “T-Bone” accident—is an especially dangerous type of accident, due to the construction of automobiles.

Generally speaking, most cars are stronger at the front and rear, and are weaker on the sides and roof. So when one car clams into the side of another car, it is hitting the car’s weakest point. Recently, most car manufactures have added side-curtain airbags, that can help prevent serious injury. However, even with the most state of the art safety features, safety can never be guaranteed.
