Semi-Truck Driver Hits Motorist on the Side of the Road

Last Friday, a motorist was on the side of the road after getting into a minor accident with another car as a semi-truck whizzed past the accident and hit the motorist, who was outside the car. According to a story by WPTV.com, at about 12:30 p.m. the motorist attempted to cross the road but was hit by the tractor trailer, which was traveling eastbound on the Sawgrass Expressway.

The semi truck driver, which was towing a white box trailer and was missing one of it’s front mirrors, did not stop but decided to continue on instead. Police are currently conducting an investigation and searching for the truck’s driver.

Truckers Are Responsible for More than Their Share of Accidents

Perhaps it comes as a surprise because it is their profession, but semi-truck drivers cause a disproportionate amount of accidents on Florida freeways. Then again, considering the size of the equipment they tow, maybe this is not so surprising.
The bottom line is that trucks are necessary to our economy but do take their toll. In 2009, there were almost 300,000 accidents involving large trucks or busses. During that same year there were just about 3,000 fatal injuries due to truck accidents.
Most accidents involving large trucks occur on a weekday and many of the accidents occur during the nighttime hours.

Truck Driver’s Should Be Responsible to Their Victims

Truck drivers, and the companies they drive for, should be help responsible for the negligent or reckless driving. Truck drivers are regulated by state and federal laws. For example, truck drivers may only travel a certain number of miles without resting. Despite these regulations, sometimes truckers are in a hurry to drop of their goods and disregard these rules, causing injury to other motorists.

In these cases, the law may hold the individual drivers, as well as the company for whom they drive, responsible to the accident victim. As drivers, we can only do so much to prevent an accident; some things are beyond our control. In these cases, the law holds the negligent or reckless driver responsible to their victim.

Injured in a Big Truck Accident?

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident involving a semi truck or tractor trailer, you may be entitled to compensation.
