Aggressive Driving Leads to Fatality in Weston

Last month, a fleeing gunman crashed into a Mercedes SUV, sending the crushed vehicle off the side of the road and killing the driver. According to a report by the New York Daily News, the gunman shot a woman and her daughter in Miami before fleeing on U.S. 27. The woman was found dead and her daughter was later pronounced dead while in the hospital.

Helicopter footage shows the fleeing gunman, driving a Mercedes sedan, weaving in and out of traffic, travelling at an extremely high rate of speed. Several witnesses reported seeing the Mercedes “fly” by them. When the fleeing driver approached Griffin Road, a Mercedes SUV pulled out in front of the SUV. The fleeing gunman T-boned the SUV, crushing it and sending it off the side of the road. The driver of the SUV was thrown from her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drivers Have a Duty to Other Drivers

All drivers have a duty to fellow drivers to drive safely. In addition to any criminal penalties that a reckless driver may incur as a result of their driving, victims of that driver’s reckless or negligent behavior can also file civil lawsuits against the driver to compensate them for the injuries they suffered.

The law allows this recovery to compensate the victims of accidents, as well as to deter, or discourage, dangerous driving habits. The idea is that, if we heavily fine reckless drivers, people will think twice before engaging in that kind of driving. Indeed, these incentives tend to work.
